'What Kind of Bubble Is AI?'

"Of course AI is a bubble," argues tech activist/blogger/science fiction author Cory Doctorow. The real question is what happens when it bursts? Doctorow examines history — the "irrational exuberance" of the dotcom bubble, 2008's financial derivatives, NFTs, and even cryptocurrency. ("A few programmers were trained in Rust... but otherwise, the residue from crypto is a lot of bad digital art and worse Austrian economics.") So would an AI bubble leave anything useful behind? The largest of these models are incredibly expensive. They're expensive to make, with billions spent acquiring training data, labelling it, and running it through massive computing arrays to turn it into models. Even more important, these models are expensive to run.... Do the potential paying customers for these large models add up to enough money to keep the servers on? That's the 13 trillion dollar question, and the answer is the difference between WorldCom and Enron, or dotcoms and cryptocurrency. Though I don't have a certain answer to this question, I am skeptical. AI decision support is potentially valuable to practitioners. Accountants might value an AI tool's ability to draft a tax return. Radiologists might value the AI's guess about whether an X-ray suggests a cancerous mass. But with AIs' tendency to "hallucinate" and confabulate, there's an increasing recognition that these AI judgments require a "human in the loop" to carefully review their judgments... There just aren't that many customers for a product that makes their own high-stakes projects betÂter, but more expensive. There are many low-stakes applications — say, selling kids access to a cheap subscription that generates pictures of their RPG characters in action — but they don't pay much. The universe of low-stakes, high-dollar applications for AI is so small that I can't think of anything that belongs in it. There are some promising avenues, like "federated learning," that hypothetically combine a lot of commodity consumer hardware to replicate some of the features of those big, capital-intensive models from the bubble's beneficiaries. It may be that — as with the interregnum after the dotcom bust — AI practitioners will use their all-expenses-paid education in PyTorch and TensorFlow (AI's answer to Perl and Python) to push the limits on federated learning and small-scale AI models to new places, driven by playfulness, scientific curiosity, and a desire to solve real problems. There will also be a lot more people who understand statistical analysis at scale and how to wrangle large amounts of data. There will be a lot of people who know PyTorch and TensorFlow, too — both of these are "open source" projects, but are effectively controlled by Meta and Google, respectively. Perhaps they'll be wrestled away from their corporate owners, forked and made more broadly applicable, after those corporate behemoths move on from their money-losing Big AI bets. Our policymakers are putting a lot of energy into thinking about what they'll do if the AI bubble doesn't pop — wrangling about "AI ethics" and "AI safety." But — as with all the previous tech bubbles — very few people are talking about what we'll be able to salvage when the bubble is over. Free Weebly Legacy Plans With Custom Domains Are Being Discontinued. Now Pay Up.

mmiscool writes: Email notices went out today to legacy users of Weebly's free web site hosting service. In the early days of Weebly (before being gobbled up a credit card processing company only concerned about money) you could create a very basic web site for free and point your own custom domain at Weebly to have a relatively painless web site. Now there were lots of add-ons and extra features you could pay for like shopping carts or interactive forms but you were never required to pay for the basic web hosting. Over the years they stopped allowing new sites to be registered using the free option but they did continue to honor the old legacy free plans for existing users. That ends now. An email sent out today to legacy site holders reads This is an official notification from the Weebly account team in regards to the account under this email address. You currently have a free Weebly website published on a custom domain (or vanity URL) and are not subscribed to a paid Weebly hosting plan. As of March 28, 2023, sites connected to custom domains are required to have a Weebly hosting service plan to remain published. What does this mean for you? To keep your site published on a custom domain, you will need to purchase a paid Weebly service plan subscription. If you take no action and choose to remain on a free Weebly plan, your account information and all associated site content will remain intact and accessible to you within Editor, but your site will be unpublished on March 28, 2023 and will no longer be visible to visitors or connected to your custom domain. You will need to republish your site on a free Weebly subdomain to make it publicly visible again (ex: my-name.weebly.com). Message received. Pay up or else.

Sabine Hossenfelder's Scathing Video On the State of Particle Physics

Long-time Slashdot reader flashflood writes: Science educator Sabine Hossenfelder is a research fellow at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies. But Hossenfelder's latest YouTube video expounds upon the sorry state of particle physics, and in the process also has some interesting sidenotes on dark matter. Hossenfelder criticises what has become the standard operating procedure of particle physicists, whereby they routinely predict the existence of particles that violate the Standard Model. Eventually, the postulated particles are experimentally falsified, at which time physicists move on to even more fanciful predictions. Hossenfelder is pessimistic about the future of the field if particle physicists continue to behave in the same manner going forward. Hossenfelder also notes that in the past 50 years, only a handful of predictions have been validated, and all these were necessary elements of the Standard Model.

Activision Cooperating With Federal Insider Trading Probes

An anonymous reader quotes Reuters: Activision Blizzard is cooperating with federal investigations into trading by friends of its chief executive shortly before the gaming company disclosed its sale to Microsoft Corp, it said in a securities filing on Friday. It received requests for information from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and received a subpoena from a Department of Justice grand jury, the maker of "Call of Duty" said in an amended proxy filing. The requests "appear to relate to their respective investigations into trading by third parties – including persons known to Activision Blizzard's CEO – in securities prior to the announcement of the proposed transaction," it said.

Ukraine Official Urges 'IT Army' of World's Digital Talent To Attack Russian Energy and Financial Firms

VentureBeat reports: In Ukraine today, Mykhailo Fedorov, the country's vice prime minister, announced on Twitter, "We are creating an IT army." "We need digital talents," wrote Fedorov, who also holds the title of minister of digital transformation — sharing a link to a Telegram channel where he said operational tasks will be distributed. "We continue to fight on the cyber front." On the Telegram channel, the IT army reportedly posted its list of Russian targets — which were also translated into English "for all IT specialists from other countries...." On Friday, Christian Sorensen, a former U.S. Cyber Command official, told VentureBeat that "hacktivists around the world [will be] working against Russia, because they are the aggressor.... I think things will ramp up against western targets, but Russia and Belarus will be targeted by these groups even more" said Sorensen, formerly the operational planning team lead for the U.S. Cyber Command.... [O]n Friday, a Bloomberg report said that a hacker group that was now forming to bring counterattacks against Russia had amassed 500 members. And today, we have the announcement of Ukraine's IT army — potentially including assistance from hackers around the globe. "Whether sanctioned or not, official or not, if people have or can get the right information, know-how, and desire — they can make an impact," Sorensen said on Friday, prior to the announcement of Ukraine's IT army. "We'll have to wait and see what they are able to do." The next day Reuters reported that the official website of the Kremlin, "the office of Russian President Vladimir Putin....was down on Saturday, following reports of denial of service (DDoS) attacks on various other Russian government and state media websites. "The outages came as Ukraine's vice prime minister said it had launched an 'IT army' to combat Russia in cyberspace." But the Independent reports that the cyberattacks may have been even more extensive: Ukraine's state telecommunications agency announced on Saturday that six Russian government websites, including the Kremlin's, were down, according to The Kyiv Independent. The agency also stated that the Russian media regulator's website had gone down, and that hackers had got Russian TV channels to play the Ukrainian music. Tech Giants Are Giving China a Vital Edge In Espionage.

schwit1 shares a report: The embrace between China's intelligence services and Chinese businesses has gotten tighter, U.S. officials say. In 2017, under Xi's intensifying authoritarianism, Beijing promulgated a new national intelligence law that compels Chinese businesses to work with Chinese intelligence and security agencies whenever they are requested to do so -- a move that codified "what was pretty much what was going on for many years before, though corruption had tempered it" previously, a former senior CIA official said. In the final years of the Obama administration, national security officials had directed U.S. spy agencies to step up their intelligence collection on the relationship between the Chinese state and China's private industrial behemoths. By the advent of the Trump era, this effort had borne fruit, with the U.S. intelligence community piecing together voluminous evidence on coordination -- including back-and-forth data transfers -- between ostensibly private Chinese companies and that country's intelligence services, according to current and former U.S. officials. There was evidence of close public-private cooperation occurring on "a daily basis," according to a former Trump-era national security official. "Those commercial entities are the commercial wing of the party," the source said. "They of course cooperate with intelligence services to achieve the party's goals." Beijing's access to, and ability to sift through, troves of pilfered and otherwise obtained data "gives [China] vast opportunities to target people in foreign governments, private industries, and other sectors around the world -- in order to collect additional information they want, such as research, technology, trade secrets, or classified information," said William Evanina, the United States' top counterintelligence official. "Chinese technology companies play a key role in processing this bulk data and making it useful for China's intelligence services," he said.

Facebook Algorithm Found To 'Actively Promote' Holocaust Denial

AmiMoJo writes: Facebook's algorithm "actively promotes" Holocaust denial content according to an analysis that will increase pressure on the social media giant to remove antisemitic content relating to the Nazi genocide. An investigation by the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD), a UK-based counter-extremist organisation, found that typing "holocaust" in the Facebook search function brought up suggestions for denial pages, which in turn recommended links to publishers which sell revisionist and denial literature, as well as pages dedicated to the notorious British Holocaust denier David Irving. The findings coincide with mounting international demands from Holocaust survivors to Facebook's boss, Mark Zuckerberg, to remove such material from the site. Last Wednesday Facebook announced it was banning conspiracy theories about Jewish people "controlling the world." However, it has been unwilling to categorise Holocaust denial as a form of hate speech, a stance that ISD describe as a "conceptual blind spot." The ISD also discovered at least 36 Facebook groups with a combined 366,068 followers which are specifically dedicated to Holocaust denial or which host such content. Researchers found that when they followed public Facebook pages containing Holocaust denial content, Facebook recommended further similar content.
